Q6. 80,90年代的香港電影業十分活躍,有好多人要開戲,陳自強說他都不用怎樣去推,怎樣去捧紅鐘楚紅、張曼玉或王祖賢。看到劇本好像適合祖賢,就和片商去談;適合曼玉,就將她推薦給製片人。那時藝人檔期都很忙,曼玉、學友、紅姑、祖賢、鄭裕玲、梁家輝,每位平均一年都要拍12到13部戲,每天睡覺都不超過4個小時。

In the 1980s and 1990s, the film industry in Hong Kong was very active. Many people wanted to make films. Willie Chan said he didn’t really need to do anything specific to make Cherie Chung, Maggie Cheung or Joey Wong become stars. If he saw anything script that suits Joey, he would talk to the production companies. If he saw any that suits Maggie, he would introduce her to the producer. At that time, artists had busy schedules. Artists like Maggie Cheung, Jacky Cheung, Cherie Chung, Joey Wong, Carol Cheng and Tony Leung Ka Fai, would shoot up to 12 or 13 films per year. They slept for less than four hours per day.

真是忙得好可憐。沒得休息, 幾組戲一起拍。有時會累到流著眼淚對我說:「老豆,你給我休息一下,行不行啊?!」

They were so busy. They didn’t have time to rest. They were shooting several films at the same time. Sometimes they would cry to me, “Father, can I take a rest?”

但接了戲,就有責任去完成。我就安慰他們說:「辛苦點啦!你還年輕,每天開工出門口時,就好像看到那些錢的符號沖過來,不就會開心些了嘛!」。 But if you accept the assignment, you have the responsibility to complete it. I comforted them by saying: “You’ve been working hard. You are still young. When you go out tomorrow, you can see money coming in. Wouldn’t you be happy?”

Q7. 正是因為市場繁榮,黑社會也覺得有利可圖,当时有傳媒報導香港黑社会资金染指香港影坛,而陳自强曾被槍支威嚇,逼使交出藝人的檔期,轟動一時。

It was precisely because of the movie market boom, the gangsters also found the industry profitable. There were media reports that gangsters’ funding flew into Hong Kong’s film industry and Willie Chan was harassed by gangsters with guns to make certain artists available for them. The news caught much attention of the public.

那個不是我,是張國忠。那時他和我都是同樣地位,他那邊是男的比較強,劉德華、阿倫等。我這邊是女的,大家也會經常有些合作。 我幸運點,沒被槍指過。但也什麼都經歷過了。「劇本在這裏啦,下個星期就要開,拍不拍你自己想!」被人丟劇本、羞辱。我在酒店的大堂和對方談:「真對不起,幾個女兒都沒期……」「我不理,這是你的事。總言之,我就是這樣要人了……」 這也是講到電影蓬勃時有黑社會介入的事了。那時最困難。「我就是要這個人,拍不拍你自己想!」「好…好…,等我回去和女兒商量一下再說。」「啊?你是什麼來的?你不是經理人?回去和你的女兒商量?那你不是經理人,是什麼?傳話的?……」就這樣大庭廣眾下被罵。

That wasn’t me. That was Wallace Cheung. Back then, he was in a similar situation like me. He had stronger male artists like Andy Lau and Alan. I have stronger female artists. Sometimes we work together. I was more fortunate. I have never been harassed with guns, but I had similar experiences. “The script is here. It’s up to you if you want to shoot or not.” I have seen people throwing the script at me. I have been humiliated. I talked to them in the lobby of a hotel. “I am so sorry. Several of my daughters are not available.” “I don’t care. That’s your problem. Anyway, I want this artist.”

During the boom time, gangsters were involved in the film industry. That was the most difficult period. “I want this person. You decide whether you want to shoot or not.” “OK. I will negotiate with my daughter.” “What? Who are you? Aren’t you the manager? Negotiate with your daughter? So you are not the manager or what? Are you just a messenger?” I would get insulted this way in front of everyone.

當時的環境是這樣,你吃這口飯,必須要忍。忍完後,回去還要面對女兒呢。紅姑一聽接戲,即刻就哭:「老豆,我就要死了,1天都沒3個小時睡……」.那時精神壓力滿大的,始終你面對的是黑社會。也有的女兒不接戲而被人找上片場去打兩巴的。總之,每天都是心驚膽戰,什麼事都可能發生。

It was such an environment back then. If you work in that industry, you have to endure this. I had to go back and face my daughter. When Cherie heard that she needed to accept another filming assignment, she cried: “Father, I am dying. I do not even get to sleep for three hours a day.” We were under immense mental pressure because we were dealing with gangsters. Some of my daughters refused to film and were dragged to the film set and smacked on the face. In short, we trembled in fear every day. Anything could happen.

Q8.在香港娛樂圈40年的風風雨雨,有成功,有失敗,經歷過事業的起伏,更是嘗盡人生的甜、酸、苦、辣,學友曾和他一起捱过最辛苦的日子,所以在他這麼多的“仔仔女女”中,他最喜歡張學友。

Over four decades of Willie Chan’s career, there were ups and downs. Willie Chan experienced successes and failures. Jacky Cheung had accompanied him to endure the harshest time. So, Jacky is Willie’s favorite among all of his artists.

張學友是唯一一個,他有三個名叫做好朋友,阿哥、老豆,這樣他都叫,就算他寫封信給我或者一張卡給我,就是my brother/ my father /my friend 這樣,他當我又是father又是很好的朋友可以聊,很難講全香港是不是他唱的最好,但我覺得他都是最好其中一個,起碼我很喜歡他的歌,人,是一個很孝義的兒子、很好的老公、很負責任的一個父親,又沒有什麼壞的嗜好,我覺得是人上人,又有感情,又有feeling,對朋友又好,我可以一直這樣贊,有哪一樣東西可以說學友是不好的

Jacky Cheung was the only one who considered me as his good friend, big brother and father. When he writes a letter to me, he addressed me as “my brother/ my father /my friend”. He considers me a father, but at the same time he thinks I am a good friend that he can talk to. It’s hard to say whether he is the best singer in Hong Kong. But I do think that he is one of the best. At least, I like his songs. He is a very filial son, a very good husband and a responsible father. He doesn’t have any bad habits. He is a very good person. He cares about others. He has feelings. He treats his friends well. I always praise him. There is nothing bad to be said about Jacky.

Q9.陳自強旗下藝人多才多藝,影視歌多棲藝人比比皆是,他們可以做一個巨星,其實個人的修為都很重要。要想成為明星,是需要付出的。

Willie Chan had many artists on his book. His artists range from movie actors, TV drama actors and singers. They can become superstars. Their personal cultivation is also very important. If you want to become a star, you need to make some sacrifice.

始終你今年當然要勤勞,要不斷去練,無論歌唱也好,演技也好,你真是想?,去做好自己,做好自己的本分。。。

Of course, you need to work hard. You need to consistently practice, whether it’s your singing or acting skills. That is necessary if you truly want to do well and do your part well.

其實我覺得藝人始終都是人來的,無論兩個男的也好,女的也好,男女也好,有時出去吃飯,喝兩杯酒,這個不是過分,只不過今天他們的難處在哪里,網路越來越大,當然你做藝人始終是一個?,你會有很多後生仔當你是榜樣來的,當然檢點是需要的,沒有東西是灰的,你做得這個藝人,你做得被人喜愛的,被人崇拜的,你就要付出一點,我覺得這個世界沒有東西是免費的,因為你始終你是有following是跟他的

I have always thought artists are also humans, whether they are male or female. So it’s ok for them to go out together to have dinner. The difficulty they have today is due to the power of internet. When you are an artist, you have many young people who treat you as their role model. So you need to pay attention to your behavior. Nothing is absolute. If you want to be an artist, if you want to be liked by others and be respected by others, you need to make some sacrifices. I don’t think you can gain anything for free in this world, because you always have following.

Q10.近幾年,隨著台灣政府大力支持,台灣電影市場復甦,不僅好片連連,票房也屢創佳績,台灣電影的市場走向繁榮指日可待。 而香港電影業與之相較,則顯得有些落後了。普遍感覺就是現在在香港做片很難。

In recent years, with the support of the Taiwanese government, Taiwan's film market recovered. Many good movies appeared in the market. The box office performance improved significantly. We can see Taiwan’s film market prosper in the near future. Hong Kong’s film market, on the other hand, seems to fall behind. Many people feel that it is difficult to produce films in Hong Kong today.

因為現在同樣的價錢,同樣的價錢,同樣的票價,為什麼我不看西片,我當然看西片,西片在戲院裏面?,中國片不是不好看,等他出DVD那時買回家幾個人看,入戲院就是給西片,香港人給西片搶完

Because now, given the same price, why should I not watch foreign films? Of course I would watch foreign films. Foreign films are available in cinemas. It is not that Chinese films are bad. It’s just that people could watch them at home when they are released on DVDs. So foreign films are shown in cinemas. The Hong Kong film market is filled with foreign films.

照我看,好像臺灣,這一期大家都知臺灣很多好戲在,四、五部都排著隊了,為什麼,因為他的政府真的是很支持,他真的是培養臺灣的人拍臺灣的戲,相反如果我們香港亦都有這樣的情形,有政府這個支助,我們慢慢又去到以前港臺的合作,這部戲可能用臺灣的演繹,臺灣那邊用香港的演繹,這兩地變成又可以擦出新的火花

In Taiwan, we know that several of Taiwan’s movies are lined up for exhibition. Why is that? Because the Taiwanese government is very supportive. It encourages Taiwanese people to make Taiwanese films. If we also have similar support from the government of Hong Kong, we can cooperate with Taiwan, like what we did before. We could use Taiwanese actors. Taiwan producers can use Hong Kong actors. The cooperation can produce new creativity.

我覺得香港電演不是說沒有了,不過對於新演員是應該香港政府真是要支援,真是需要一些電演資金去支持這些人,給他們再去帶起這班人勇於創新,我相信香港電影還是有抬頭的那一天

I am not saying that there are no more Hong Kong movies. But the Hong Kong government should really support these new actors. We really need some funding to support these people, so that they can innovate and create. I believe there is hope that the Hong Kong film industry can revive some day.

十一月有些戲我是很欣賞《打擂臺》,真是?過香港的了,《逃者》這樣的戲我覺得應該可以鼓勵的,《歲月神偷》這些,但你都要壓著成本去拍,如果你是有合拍的,你可以拍到幾千萬成本都可以

There are some upcoming films in November that I really admire, such as the film “Gallants” (打擂臺). I also think films like “《逃者》” should be encouraged. For films like “Echoes of the Rainbow”, you have to keep your budget down. If you can cooperate with others, you can increase your budget to several dozen million dollars (Hong Kong dollar).

Q11.可喜的是,去年《歲月神偷》、《打擂臺》他們全部都是香港這邊自己製作,有時是掛著合拍片的,但那個感覺香港味重一點,他們都是用回了香港的味道。如有可能,陳自強不介意拍戲,不過不是為了賺錢,而是在自己心中有一些想拍的。

The good news is that films like “Echoes of the Rainbow” and “Gallants” were entirely produced by Hong Kong filmmakers. Although some claim that they are co-productions, you can still sense a strong Hong Kong feel. They used the Hong Kong flavor. If possible, Willie Chan does not mind making films, but not for the purpose of making money, rather it’s for making something he wants to make.

我自己最喜歡就是拍一些比較有人性的戲,人與人之間的感情、愛情,譬如我喜歡,我很懷念和關?拍過《阮玲玉》、《胭脂扣》這一類這樣的戲,所以我可以在這裏阿關我們合作的很愉快,我想看到的電影,就算當年都未必是最收得的電影,因為始終都是有動作的市場大一點,真的是可以去到美國。

My favorites are films that depict human nature and the emotions and love between people. For example, I like Stanley Kwan and miss making films like “Center Stage” and “Rouge”. We had a good time working with Stanley Kwan. The films I would like to see are not necessarily films that had the best box office performance of the year of its release. Action movies always have a bigger market. It’s possible to get to the US.

光陰似箭,秋去春來,經歷了40年的風雨,見證了40年的起伏,也積累了40年的友情,金牌經理人陳自強帶著他的“仔仔女女”一路瀟灑走來。 昨日的夢想,成就了今天的陳自強;退色的照片,記載著他的輝煌;難能可貴的是,陳自強始終保持著年輕熱情的心態,如今更是老當益壯,不言退休,要繼續為香港影藝,為 亞洲影藝乃至國際娛樂圈盡一份心力。

Time flies. After going through 40 years of ups and downs, and accumulating 40 years of friendships, gold medal manager Willie Chan have come along with “daughters and sons”. Yesterday’s dream led to Willie’s achievement today. The faded photos recorded his glory history. What’s most precious is that Willie has always kept a young and enthusiastic heart.
